Haggis Thrash 2024

Saturday 16th March 2024

at Lanreath Village Hall

Janet Payne recalls how the Haggis Thrash, which took place each year In Cornwall for a number of years began. It became a popular annual event held by the Liskeard Club until Covid 19 put paid to socials like this for quite a while.

‘My first Haggis Thrash was in 2008. It was held in Dobwalls Memorial Hall hosted by Ruth and Peter Thornton who were teachers of Liskeard dance class.

Sandy Nixon and band were to play, Ruth and Peter accommodated them in their own home.

Secretary of the club, Margaret Lock, bought nets of turnips and potatoes.  Liskeard members volunteered to prepare, cook and mash the vegetables. The Haggis Ruth had frozen from her Hogmanay trip to Scotland.

On the day Ruth’s daughter, Kath and friend Alison prepared the meal. Tinned fruit salad and Ice cream, tea or coffee was served to complete the menu.

A lady piper piped in the Haggis and dancer Bill Urquhart addressed the Haggis.

Before Ruth passed away this was always the format for the Liskeard annual dance.’

It was Ruth’s wish that the event should continue after her death and now Cornwall RSCDS are delighted to announce, in her honour, the revival of the Haggis Thrash on 16th March 2024 at Lanreath Village Hall. Sandy Nixon and his band always came down from Scotland for the original events, so the committee are very pleased that he has agreed to play for us on this occasion.

There will be two dances: an afternoon dance with an easy programme suitable for the less experienced dancer and the evening event at which the following menu will be provided by Mark Farley of Culinary Affair from Saltash.

Menu:  Traditional haggis or vegetarian haggis, neeps and tatties served with a whisky cream gravy followed by Cranachan or fresh fruit salad and clotted cream
