18 dancers, friends and Nellie the dog met at Lerryn Village Hall on Friday 10th August for the annual Trevone Scottish Country Dancers Summer social. Lerryn is a pretty little village, 3 miles from Lostwithiel situated on the River Lerryn a tributary of the Fowey River. It has a village hall and well stocked shop in the centre. We left our cars in the car park beside a large sign that said “Car park liable to flooding”. This was difficult to believe at the time when there was only a trickle of water in the stream and all the stepping stones were high and dry! By the time we left after dancing it was a very different picture!
Janet Wilkins was our walk leader and she headed off over the famous stepping stones with us all in hot pursuit. Even Nellie decided to use the stones too. Our walk took us along the banks of the Lerryn River. As it was low tide the mud flats were well exposed offering plenty of opportunities for a spot of bird watching on the way. Most of the walk was through Ethy Wood, an ancient woodland, giving us some protection from the heavy rain showers we kept encountering. As we joined the Fowey River we could see the village of Golant in the distance.
The well trodden path eventually brought us to the Church of St Winnow right on the banks of the River Fowey – a beautiful spot. The church is 15th Century and has a beautifully carved rood screen and interesting stained glass windows. Here we stopped for lunch at the little food van serving homemade pasties and freshly prepared pork, stuffing & apple sauce rolls washed down with a mug of tea.
Then it was a brisk walk back to start dancing at 2pm. More dancers joined us for the afternoon session. It was a friendly relaxed afternoon of dancing which everyone enjoyed. Then it was time for afternoon tea and cakes to celebrate Helen’s birthday.
On returning to our cars we were amazed to see that the water was only inches away from flooding the car park – a lucky escape!
Thank you to all who joined us for a very pleasant and sociable day.
